Born Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun popularly known as Wizkid , is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. He was born on 16 July 1990 in Surulere, a residential and commercial area of Lagos. Wizkid started his career in music at the age of 11 and was able to release a collaborative album with the Glorious Five, a group he and a couple of his church friends created.
His journey to stardom started after he got signed to Banky W.’s record label Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E). He officially became famous and known around the world after releasing “Holla at Your Boy” from his debut studio album, Superstar (2011). Singles like “Tease Me/Bad Guys”, “Don’t Dull”, “Love My Baby”, “Pakurumo” and “Oluwa Lo Ni” were used to back up the Superstar album. His highly anticipated second studio album, “Ayo”, was released in September 2014 and was preceded by six singles: “Jaiye Jaiye”, “On Top Your Matter”, “One Question”, “Joy”, “Bombay” and “Show You the Money”.
In 2016, Wizkid gained international recognition following his collaboration with Drake on the global top-chatting hit, “One Dance”, which reached number one in 15 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia. In addition to his achievements, he has work with several other local and international artist like Bracket on “Girl”, with Lynxxx on “Fine Lady”, “Sexy Mama” (with Iyanya), “Slow Down” (with R2Bees), “The Matter” (with Maleek Berry), “Pull Over” (with KCee) and “Bad Girl” (with Jesse Jagz) and many more.
Wizkid successfully released two albums under E.M.E imprint, following the expiration of his 5-year recording contract, he left E.M.E. On 1 March 2017, it was reported by Billboard magazine that Wizkid signed a multi-album deal with RCA Records. This news was reported by several media outlets in September 2016. The news was finally confirmed by the chairman and CEO of RCA Records, Peter Edge, while he was giving a speech concerning Music Business Worldwide in January 2017. In 2013, Forbes and Channel O’s compiled the list of the Top 10 Richest/Bankable African Artists and Wizkid was ranked 5th on the list which got every one talking.
Early Life And Music Career
Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun who is better known by his stage name, Wizkid was born on 16 July 1990 in Surulere, Lagos state Nigeria. Wizkid was born and bred in Lagos where he grew up with twelve female siblings, a very large house. His mother is a Pentecostal Christian and his father practices Islam. According to the music prodigy, his father married three wives he revealed this audio interview with Tim Westwood in 2012. When he started music back in the days, He said he formed a group called the Glorious Five with a couple of his church friends and he was called Lil Prinz until 2006. He started singing at the age of 11 and use to listen to songs recorded by King Sunny Ade, Fela Kuti, and Bob Marley.
The group called Glorious Five did well during that time as they managed to release an album prior to disbanding. After some time they parted ways to pursue their solo career in music which led Wizkid to the path of OJB Jezreel, a record producer who prevented him from recording for a year. He used to visit OJB’s PointBeat Studios frequently, he watched 2 Face Idibia record songs for his Grass 2 Grace album. Wizkid was a in the studio when Sound Sultan recorded his first album titled “Jagbajantis”.
According to the singer, he co-wrote Banky W’s “Omoge You Too Much”, a song off The W Experience album. He also worked with super star Naeto C, OJB Jezreel, Ikechukwu, before the spotlight . He cited OJB Jezreel and Naeto C as his mentor when he was a newbie in the business.
Rose To Stardom —Superstar
After working persistently for couple of years Wizkid has finally make it to the top of his career within the shortest possible time. He recorded his debut studio album, Superstar, in 2009 and it was a big success for him . “Holla at Your Boy” was one of the biggest hit in the album and it was the album’s lead single. The song earned him the Next Rated award at The Headies 2011, and was nominated for Best Pop Single at the same awards event. “Holla at Your Boy” was nominated for Most Gifted Newcomer Video at the 2011 Channel O Music Video Awards. The same song was also nominated for Best Afro Pop Video at the 2011 Nigeria Music Video Awards (NMVA).
Other songs released subsequently are “Tease Me/Bad Guys” released on the 2nd of April 2010 , “Don’t Dull” came in on 6 December 2010. Wizkid have worked with several ace music Nigerian producer like E-Kelly, Jay Sleek, Shizzi, DJ Klem, Masterkraft, Q-Beats and Samklef who really has contributed a lot to his success.
The album features guest appearances from Banky W., Skales, D’Prince and Wande Coal. It was initially scheduled for release on 14 February 2011, but was later pushed back. On 12 June 2011, Wizkid hosted an album launch party at the Expo Hall of the Eko Hotel and Suites. The album’s launch party featured performances from Banky W, Skales, 2face Idibia, Samklef, Wande Coal, D’Prince, Olamide, eLDee, Jesse Jagz, Ice Prince, Lynxxx and Seyi Shay. Superstar garnered Best Album of the Year at the 2012 Nigeria Entertainment Awards, and was nominated for Album of the Year at The Headies 2012

One Dance With Drake
Wizkid made history on April 5, 2016, as the first Nigerian artiste to emerge on Billboard’s Twitter Last 24 hours chart following his guest feature on Drake’s afrobeat-infused “One Dance” single which charted at number 21 and in May 12, 2016, the song reached number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, a position it kept for 10 non-consecutive weeks. The song “One Dance” was an international hit that topped charts in 15 different countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France and Germany.
On 5 June 2016, Wizkid made another history as his promotional single “Like This” made its premiere on Drake’s OVO Sound Radio in June 2016. The single was produced by Amsterdam-based Ghanaian producer DJ Henry X.
Sounds From the Other Side
On 5 January 2015, Wizkid released the music video for “Ojuelegba” a song where he narrated his struggles as an uup and coming artiste. The remix to the song features vocals from Drake and Skepta; it premiered on OVO Sound Radio in July 2015. On October 2014, was in London and he announced he was working on a new album. Few weeks later, he released a song titled “African Bad Gyal” featuring Chris Brown. We also remember that Wizkid and Chris Brown performed the song together at the latter’s concert in Durban, South Africa in April 2015.
The Fader magazine published an interview they had with Wizkid, where he announced his upcoming EP titled Sounds from the Other Side. Much information weren’t revealed about the album as at that time. As we all know, Wizkid tal and do. He finally release Sounds from the Other Side in 2017 and the topic was all over the internet as people couldn’t get enough of the album.
“Come Closing” Single
Wizkid released an internationally acclaimed single titled “Come Closer” . This is one of his most popular song in the history of his career. He featured Drake in the remix of the song but he didn’t show up for the video shot and reason unknown. Wizkid did a news version of the video with fans expecting to see Drake in it but he didn’t come closer the second time.
Δ In 2012, Wizkid signed a one-year endorsement deal with Pepsi reportedly worth 350,000 U.S dollars. He traveled to to Beirut, Lebanon along side Tiwa Savage for a Pepsi commercial shoot.
Δ Wizkid signed a one-year deal with MTN Nigeria. He left MTN for GLOBACOM in 2016. Pulse reported that Wizkid ditched MTN and signed a ₦128 million naira deal with GLOBACOM.
