Aituaje Iruobe is a top Nigerian singer who is more popular with her stage name Waje, an acronym for “Words aren’t just enough” . Waje is one of the top female Nigerian musician whose vocal range covers three octaves. She gained recognition after being featured in the remake of P-Square’s “Omoge Mi” and  “Do Me” in 2008. The Nigerian female songtress was also featured on Banky W’s “Thief My Kele” and M.I’s “One Naira”. Waje was among the four judges in the inaugural season of “The Voice Nigeria” in 2016.

Early Life And Background

Waje was born in Akure, Ondo State , Nigeria then moved to Benin City, Edo State where she was raised by her parents. She is the first child and the first daughter in her family. She was born on September 1, 1980 in Akure before her parents relocated to Edo state . Getting to Benin where her parents resided for several years, they got divorced when she was young, and had to overcome difficult situations. She received her secondary school education at Word of Faith Group of Schools and was a member of the choir in the school. She was a young singer blessed with the voice of angel and she once sang gospel tunes to the delight of the late Archbishop Benson Idahosa of Church of God mission int. Archbishop Benson who was very impressed with her singing took it upon himself to sponsor her throughout her whole secondary school days.

After obtaining her SSCE from Word of Faith Group of Schools, she then proceeded to Nsukka to receive a degree in social work at University of Nigeria. Waje started taking her singing career professionally while she was in the university, she did more of music than reading of books , she started performing at school concerts and fellowships. She cited Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin as her key musical influence and said to always listen to their songs all the time.

Singing Career

While she was studying at University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), she focused more on her musical career , she worked part-time in tourism. Waje decided to take the next step and fully launch her music career in year 2007 whilst she was still a student at the time and paid her dues by doing lots of free shows and gigs, singing at every given opportunity. She became popular in 2008, when she featured in the P-Square hit track titled “Do Me”. This was one of the hottest song as of that time and it was critically acclaimed across Nigeria and was widely known across Africa and some parts of Europe. This appearance helped boost her career a little bit as she was becoming popular in the industry.

After working with P-Square in 2008, she later participated in Advanced Warning (a reality TV show which featured artists that are on the verge of a breakthrough). This reality show was put together by MTV Base South Africa and Zain Nigeria, where she came out as the first runner up. She has performed on big stages with many international artists such as Wyclef Jean , Kerry Hilson and local musicians like M.I Abaga, P-Square, Yemi Alade amongst others. Waje has also worked with and also some hit songs that have earned a number of award nominations and winnings.

Waje launched her first studio album in 2013. She released the video for “Coco Baby” which turned out to be a huge success, she released single titled “Left For Good” featuring Patoranking and Godwin Strings in August 2015. She participated in ONE Campaign’s ‘Poverty is Sêxist’ in 2015 and did her verse in the theme song tiled “Strong girl” .She is one of the judges for The Voice Nigeria alongside Tuface (2face Idibia), Timi Dakolo and Patoranking . Aside singing, she is also an actress who made her acting debut on the movie titled “Tunnel”, with Femi Jacobs, Patrick Doyle, Nse- Etm, Lepacious Bose, and others.

Waje has a sister that is an actress too, she is called “Amaka Iruobe” and had bit parts in popular soap opera Tinsel and the movie First Cut. Waje has really represented his community through an organisation tagged “Waje’s Safe House” where she teams up with youths and NGOs quarterly to help fight for their cause.

Waje has a daughter named Emerald Iruobe but the identity of her baby daddy remains unknown to us . But we are aware that she once dated Nigerian rapper Gino ba in the days.
