Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi whose popular name is Rotimi Amaechi, is a Nigerian politician who served as the fifth Governor of Rivers State from 2007 to 2015. The popular politician was re-elected for a second term on 26 April 2011 before he left the seat for Nigeria’s Minister Of Transportation ,a position he is currently holding. Early Life And Education Background

Rotimi Amaechi was born on 27 May 1965 in Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State to the family of late Elder Fidelis Amaechi and Mrs Mary Amaechi. When he was birthed, he was named Igbo name , his initial name means “God is strength or power” while the last one is “who knows tomorrow” . Rotimi was bred in Diobu, a densely populated neighbourhood in Port Harcourt.

He had his first taste of education at St Theresa’s Primary School from 1970 to 1976 and later earned his West African Senior School Certificate in 1982 from Government Secondary School Okolobiri. After obtaining his WAEC certificate which is a prerequisite for entering into the University, he then proceeded to University of Port Harcourt in 1987 where he bagged Bachelor of Arts degree (Honours) in English Studies and Literature.

While he was in Uniport, he served as the President of the National Union of Rivers State Students (NURSS) before he graduated. After his graduation, he completed his mandatory National Youth Service corps the following year which is year 1988.

After his one year National Youth Service corps , he secured a job at Services of Pamo Clinics and Hospitals Limited owned by Peter Odili, the former Governor of Rivers State. He worked at Pamo Clinics and Hospitals for some years before he called it a quite in year 1992 to pursue a political career.

Political Career And Success

Rotimi Amaechi debut political office was when he was appointed as the new Secretary of the now defunct National Republican Convention in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State. After holding that offfice for some years, he also served as the Special Assistant to the Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Sir (Dr.) Peter Odili, and a member of the Board of West Africa Glass Industry as well as Risonpalm Nigeria Limited.

As a result of the trust and believe that Dr. Peter Odili had in him when it comes to politics, he adopted him as his political son , guiding and nurturing him in politics and he was behind his projection into the Rivers State House of Assembly in year 1999. Rotimi Amaechi also served as the Rivers State’s Secretary of the Democratic Party of Nigeria (DPN) caretaker committee after in 1996 during the transition programme of General Sanni Abacha junta.

He become the a member of the Rivers State House of Assembly to represent his constituency after he contested and won a seat in year 1999. After some years, he was appointed as the Speaker of the House of Assembly.

He was subsequently elected as the Chairman of Nigeria’s Conference of Speakers of State Assemblies. It is worth noting that he was also reelected into the State House of Assembly in May 2003 and was also re-elected as the Speaker.

Governorship Career

In 2007, Rotimi Amaechi contested and won the People’s Democratic Party primary for Rivers State Governor. For some reasons, his name was substituted by the party and the case was taken to a court and it eventually got to the Supreme Court and he was declared the winner.

He officially become the governor of River State on October 26, 2007 following the ruling Supreme Court that he was rightful candidate of the PDP and winner of the April 2007 Governorship election in Rivers State. After serving as the Governor of River State for four years, he was re-elected for a second term after four years in April 2011 because the people of Port-Harcourt believed so much in his ability to transformed the state totally into something they desire.

Rotimi Amaechi administration is said to be one of the best they have ever had and it focused more on infrastructure development, construction of roads and bridges, and the plan was to connect all parts of the states by road building a good road network like the ones in the developed countries.

Ameachi was also very concerned about urban renewal and modernization of transportation services. His tenure also built monorail to provide mass transportation within the city of Port Harcourt. He also embarked on project like building of power plant projects (Afam, Trans Amadi, Onne) to facilitate and improve power supply in the State.

The politician play a very important and significant role in Nigeria politic. He holds national honour of the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).
