His full name is Owelle Rochas Anayo Okorocha but he is widely known as Rochas Okorocha, is a Nigerian multi-billionaire businessman, education philanthropist and politician from Imo State, Nigeria and Incumbent Governor of Imo state. He won the 6 May 2011 gubernatorial election in Imo State and was re-elected for his second term on April 11, 2015. He one of the most popular Nigerian politician who is always on the news as a result of his controversial lifestyle. Rochas Okorocha is the founder of Rochas Foundation, a charity comprising a number of special schools that are spread all over Nigeria that gives scholarship to the less privileged children in the Nigerian society.
He initially ran on the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) platform in his first attempt and was later projected under All Progressives Congress in his second attempt . He had victory on both occasions as he defeated his closest rival, incumbent governor Ikedi Ohakim and serving Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha.
Early Life , Background And Education
Owelle Rochas Anayo Okorocha (OON) who is better known as Rochas Okorocha was born on September 22, 1962 in Ogboko, Ideato South Local Government Area of Imo State. The Imo state politician had a very humble beginning and rose from nothing to something(From Rags to Riches) . He was born into a family that is very poor , as a humble child he resorting to hawking of groceries in Barkin Ladi, Jos because he had to survive the hardship. After struggling for some years he managed to secure a job in a school where he was later promoted to the rank of a proprietor in the commercial school.

Rochas Okorocha attended Juladaco High School, Jos from 1976 to 1981 . After Completing his secondary school education, he got admission into the University of Jos where he obtained a diploma in Public Administration between 1990 and 1991. After some years , he came back to University of Jos between 1993 — 1994 to obtain an advanced diploma in Public Administration. Rochas Okorocha : Break-Through
Unlike many Nigerian politician who were born into riches, Rochas Okorocha wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his mouth because he was born into penury, he had to struggle to acquire the silver spoon. When he finally understood that he had to survive all by himself as a result of their poverty, he realized that there is a task ahead of him that is “survival” . This time he had to work extra hour to make both ends meet by juggling his education with street trading. His hustle started from his childhood days because he had to hawk to survive and sometimes he will miss school . He revealed that he didn’t have straight school experience while growing up because he had to combine his street trading with his academics .
He said he started getting money at his early age which is the money he realize from his petty trading . He said he bought a bus when he was still in secondary school and bought television set in primary school from the sale of oranges,coconuts and used clothes also known as “Aloko”. After trading for a year he will later use his savings to buy something tangible. He said he made his one million dollars when he was working as a commission agent from the sale of used equipment in Bauchi State where Balfour Beatty was constructing the Balanga Dam. It happened when the company was folding up he was one of the agents that sold used equipment and he realized N1.1 million when it was equivalent to $1 million dollars.
Everything happened so fast , “At the age of nine I bought a television set, at 14 I bought a bus, at the age of 19/20 I became head of a commercial school, when i clocked 22/23 years i was appointed as the head of a commercial school, at 23 i became a proprietor of a commercial school before i later went into cement business (BBC) in Gboko, Benue State. He got married at the age of 24 and became a member of National Constitutional Conference at 29. I ran for governor and i failed , i later ran for presidency and later became a presidential adviser. Again , i ran for presidency and it didn’t go well and i had to move on with my life.
Early Political Career
Prior to he entering into politic , he was the president of the Nigerian Red Cross Society which has grown stronger over the years. Rochas was not satisfied with job . With the influence of his position at the Nigerian Red Cross Society he dive into politics at both state and national levels. In 1999, he represented Ideato South and North Federal Constituency were he served as the Federal Commissioner representing Imo State in the Federal Character Commission, and also won the position of the chairman of the Youth wing of Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in the same year; 1999. Later that year, he contested the gubernatorial election in Imo State and lost . According to reports, he won the election but was denied to right to the seat due to the prevalence of god-fatherism in Nigerian Politics those days. He again contested for presidency under the platform of All Nigerians Peoples Party (ANPP) in 2003 and lost . Due to his determination he was later called upon and appointed the special adviser to the president on inter-party affairs.
After some years, Rochas Okorocha formed the Action Alliance (AA) party which was precisely in 2005, his plan was to become a Presidential candidate for the AA in the 2007 elections. He again returned to the PDP, and in September 2007 he revealed his intention to become PDP National Chairman. He decamped to join All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in the build-up to the 2011 general election. He was chosen for gubernatorial election by APGA for Imo State governorship position. He emerged the winner of the election and was sworn in as the governor of Imo State on May 29, 2011.
