Regina Askia-Williams whose real names are Imaobong Regina Askia Usoro, is a Nigerian-born, American-based family nurse practitioner (FNP), healthcare and educational activist, actress, model, television producer, writer, and public speaker. The ravishing Nigerian lady rose to fame when she started her acting and modelling career.

She was a former beauty queen and actress who become known/famous after venturing into movie acting and modelling. She was one of the most popular and prominent face in the Nigerian movie scene in the 90s but unfortunately she no longer appear in movies because she relocated to America several years ago to focus on other career which pays higher and better then her Nollywood career.

The beautiful and multi-talented Nollywood actress who is also invoked in other several areas was born Imaobong Regina Askia Usoro in Lagos in 1967. She is originally from Ukanafun, a small village in Akwa Ibom State in the south southern part of Nigeria.

She attended her basic education which include her primary and secondary school education in Lagos State, Nigeria and obtained both her First School Leaving Certificate and West African Senior School Certificate.

After completing her formal education, she proceeded to University of Calabar but transferred to the University of Lagos where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and won the Miss UNILAG Beauty Pageant. The same year, she competed in other pageants which included the MBGN 1988 and Miss Intercontinental Pageant. She finished the contest as the second runner up at the MBGN contest. However she became the title holder when Bianca Onoh resigned.

The dark-skinned woman also represented Nigeria at the Miss International in Japan but didn’t come out with a flying colours because she didn’t emerge winner, she won the award for the Most Outstanding Traditional Costume. She also represented the country at the Miss Charm International held in Leningrad, Russia in 1990.

Askia-Williams career started when she was a former Medical student who was transferred from the University of Calabar to the University of Lagos. She contested and emerged the winner of Miss Unilag(University of Lagos). That same year, she competed in the MBGN 1988 contest. She was the crowds favorite contestant as well as the outgoing Miss Intercontinental, Joan Maynard, she finished second place. She was crowned titleholder the following year when winner Bianca Onoh resigned.

She has represented Nigeria at different levels in time past. Askia-Williams represented Nigeria at Miss Charm International held in Leningrad, Russia in year 1990 and finished second. She also became the first Nigerian at Miss International in Japan, where she made an impact with the most outstanding traditional costume, she made history with that achievement.

After successfully becoming a public figure and opinion setter as a beauty pageant winner, she was opportune to appear in several Nigerian print and television commercials including Kessingsheen Hair Care, boutique chain Collectibles, and most famously, Visine.

She also had a brief stint on several runway shows. She modeled for couple of companies including 2000-N-Six face cleansing range alongside her daughter, model Stephanie Hornecker. She hosted a fashion show at the Nigerian Embassy in New York City in year 2005 with the main aim to create awareness for the plight of children’s social amenities in Nigeria, she hosted a charity fashion show at Lehman College in the Bronx, New York in the following year 2006 which displayed the creations of top African designers and her own label Regine Fashions.

Acting Career

She officially launched her acting career in year 1993 in Nigerian soap Fortunes (later Mega Fortunes) on NTA Network where she played gold-digger Tokunbo Johnson, this role earned her critical acclaim and roles in Nollywood movies. She has won several awards and earned couple of nominations for her exceptional display of talent in Nollywood movies.

She won “Best Actress in Nigeria” by Afro Hollywood London in 2000 – and has produced several television shows and films.

She has acted in several Nigerian Movies “Nollywood” during the 1990s and early 2000s. She has a huge fan base in Nigeria, Tanzania and Ghana because her movies were able to reach a wide audience in Africa.
