Patrick Nnaemeka Okorie popularly called Patoranking, is a Nigerian reggae-dancehall singer and songwriter born and brought up Ijegun-Egba, date of birth is (27 May, 1990). He started his music career years back doing underground collaborations with artists such as XProject, Konga, Slam and Reggie Rockstone.
His professional music career kicked started when he signed a record deal with K-Solo’s “Igberaga Records” in 2010 and released track like “Up in D Club” under the imprint. Patoranking gained recognition after signing a record deal with “Timaya’s Dem Mama Records” and releasing his hit song “Alubarika”. After sometime , he left Dem Mama Records and joined another label called “Foston Musik” and released “Girlie O”, a single that put him in that spot. The following year which is 2015, the “Money Dey Find Me” crooner signed a distribution deal with VP Record which he announced via his Instagram page.
Early Life, Background And Growing Up
Patoranking is a Nigerian reggae-dancehall singer and songwriter, born on 27 May 1990, to Mr. and Mrs. Okorie. He lived with his family in an area called Ijegun-Egba Satellite Town before they later relocated to Ebute Metta. He completed his secondary school education at Jibril Martin Memorial Grammar School in Iponri after attending Citizen Comprehensive College Epe. He wrote his SSCE at Jibril Martin Memorial Grammar School in Iponri.
Patoranking grew up loving musicians like Buju Banton, Bob Marley, Fela Kuti, Shakar Demus,P lies etc as he grew up listening to their songs. He cited Buju Banton, Bob Marley, Fela Kuti, Lucky Dube, Chaka Demus, Majek Fashek, Blackky, Blackface, Tuface and Marvelous Benjy as his key musical influences.
He started his career officially as a dancing , dancing to all kind of songs especially ghetto made music and dance hall vibes in street jams, carnival, gigs and was importuned to appear in some local musical videos. In 2003 he joined a six man Afro hip hop group known as Da Flavour Squad as the lead vocal and the youngest, they performed in a lot of shows within and outside Lagos, After some time they parted ways to pursue their solo career. In a brief chat with Entertainment Express in year 2012, Patoranking said that his stage name was given to him by a Jamaican artist whom he met at Alpha Beach in Lagos.
His solo career kicked off properly after he go signed to K-solo’s label “K-solo Music” where he released more than three tracks like “So Nice”, “Anything Goes”, “Jolly” and “Hold am” and some others that dosn’t ring bell. In May 2012, Patoranking released a single titled “Iya Bisi” featuring Qdot and Kbaj. The song, which is a fusion of dancehall and Fuji, was produced by Drumphase.
He became popular and known around Nigeria and Africa at large after he signed under Timaya’s “Dem Mama” records in 2013. He released one of his chat-topping single titled “Alu barika,” under the Egberi papa 1 imprint.
Timiya was determined to take his new signee to the next level so that he can make it to the top and become his formidable cash bringer. After the release of this hot single , they came out with the remix of the song this time featuring the Egberi papa 1 of Bayelsa, Timaya himself. The video and audio for “Alubarika” was released simultaneously on 12 September 2013, the video was shot by AJE Films.
According to Paranking an interview with Victor Akande of The Nation, he said the song as a summary of his life as a musician. This song was able to increase his fan base as they all love the song , it gave him an edge to working with established musicians.
Fast forward to February 2014, Patoranking signed a record deal with Foston Musik . Meanwhile, Timaya dislosed in an interview with Toolz on NdaniTv’s The Juice, he said Patoranking left his label and was never officially signed.
On 4 February 2014, Patoranking released “Girlie O”, a song produced by WizzyPro. The music video was cooked in London by Moe Musa. It was released on 5 February 2014, a day after the audio release. He featured Tiwa Savage in the remix of “Girlie O ” which was released on 19 May 2014. The video was spotted at number 9 on MTV Base’s Official Naija Top 10 chart.
Seyi Shay featured Patoranking on her song titled “Murda” alongside Shaydee. The song was produced by Dokta Frabz and released on 1 April 2014. On 11 May 2014, the music video for “Murda” was released and uploaded onto Vevo. The colorful video was directed by Meji Alabi for JM Films.
The following year was good for him as he was able to released several hit singles that marked a successful year for the “Girlie O” crooner. His singles include “Daniella Whine” and “My Woman, My Everything” , they were all chart toppers on the MTV base Official Naija Top 10 Chart.
God Over Everything Album
On 1 August 2016, Patoranking released his debut studio album, God Over Everything . The album features guest appearances from Phyno, Wizkid, Sarkodie, Olamide, Elephant Man, and Wasiu Ayinde Marshall. The album was placed on number 4 on Billboard’s Reggae Albums chart.
The Voice Nigeria
Patoranking is now a big star in the Nigeria Entertianment scene. In January 2016, Patoranking was honored as one of the judges for the maiden edition of the singing competition The Voice Nigeria
