Enoch Adejare Adeboye also address as Pastor E.A. Adeboye, is a Nigerian pastor born on the 2nd of March 1942 in Ifewara, Osun State, Nigeria. He was ordained General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in 1981, a successor of Papa Akindayomi, who had died the previous year.

Enoch Adeboye gained prominence upon being appointed as the General Overseer of Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG). His journey into fame started back in the days when he use to translate the sermons of its then Pastor and founder, Rev. Josiah Olufemi Akindayomi, from Yoruba into English. He was devoted to the Lord and his commitment towards helping the common man understand the nuances of Christianity, he helped to expand the church which now has branches in many countries.

Before his devotion to the church, he used to be a lecturer in mathematics at the universities of Lagos and Ilorin. He has always believe in God and his existence but he got to know that God really existed in heaven and everything said about him is true when he finally grew up into a man. He had a revelation in 1973 and received the Lord Jesus as his personal Lord and Saviour. Since that moment Enoch Adeboye has wholeheartedly surrender and dedicated his life fully to the service of God. As a pure repented soul, he realized that the purpose of his life was to spread the teachings of Christianity and thus he eventually gave up his prestigious university position to become a full-time preacher and teacher of the word of God.

Enoch Adejare Adeboye was born on March 2, 1942 in Ifewara, Osun State, situated in the South-Western part of Nigeria, he was so determined to get the best education despite coming from a poor background. His parents were very poor and he was one of their four children. His father wasn’t educated  and didn’t have plans to make sure his children get educated even if he would really love to but there was no money to take care of their school expenses, so he decided to concern himself with his farming activities.

Young Adeboye was very concern about receiving a formal education and when his requests to be sent to school were dismissed by his father severally , he almost gave up life. In a bid to persuade his father to change his mind he embarked on hunger-strike for some days. His father who has a soft heart eventually gave in and decided to send him to school . He sold his goat so that he could afford to pay his school fees, he was enrolled at the only missionary school in their village.

He was admitted into Ilesha Grammar School, Osun State, Nigeria in 1956. Young Adeboye had an aptitude for science, particularly mathematics, which he chose to pursue at the university level. He started school quite late but his love for education was very strong and unshakable.

Young Adeboye was determined to pursue a higher education to the end but the ongoing Nigerian Civil War and his family’s dire financial condition threatened to abort his ambitions.

As God will have it ,he was admitted into The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, to study mathematics. He studied there for some time before he move to the University of Ibadan, Nigeria to continue his education. He bagged his B.Sc. in Mathematics from the university of Ibadan between 1964 to 1967 and subsequently got his PhD in applied mathematics from the University of Lagos . He worked as a lecturer in mathematics at the universities of Lagos and Ilorin for some time.


His desire in school was to become the youngest Vice Chancellor (University President) of any one of the front-line Universities in Nigeria. His brilliant academic records was an edge for him towards achieving that dream. After graduating from the university, he got a lecturing job at the universities of Lagos and Ilorin.

He finally got married to his wife in early 1970s but they couldn’t produce children. God smiled on them and gave them two children which she delivered through caesarean surgery and the doctors had advised them not to have more. They wanted more children and as couple who trust in their God they didn’t concern themselves with any fear because of what the doctor told them. They prayed together all the time and decided to embarked on a spiritual journey to seek a solution. That was how they came to the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in 1973 which was then headed by the General Superintendent, Pastor Josiah Oluwafemi Akindayomi. They became officially born again on 29 July, 1973 with a decision to serve God fully and truly.

His initial task in the church was to translate Akindayomi’s sermons from the pastor’s native language Yoruba into English. From there he started organizing Bible Study meetings, Crusades, Revivals, Outreaches and the evangelistic programs known as the Congress which proved to be very successful. The church was very impressed with his dedication to the things of God and it was very obvious that he will be the successor of Akindayomi . The presiding pastor and  General Overseer of the church passed in 1981, and Adeboye took over as the church General Overseer .

After his appointment as the General Overseer of the church, taking over from Papa Akindayomi,  he was still lecturing at Ilorin for three years but finally gave up his lecturing job to do God’s work full time.

Nigerian Government made a regulation which was draft down by the financial regulations council, this regulation affects all registered churches, mosques and Civil Society Organizations was put in place, placing a twenty-year cap on the leadership tenure of these organizations. As a result it was now necessary for Enoch Adejare Adeboye to step down from his current position in the church.

On January 7, 2017 Pastor J.O. Obayemi was appointed to head the church in Nigeria, while Pastor E. A. Adeboye still remains the General overseer of RCCG globally. People often misunderstand it, he still remain the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) while Pastor J.O. Obayemi is to head the church in Nigeria.
