Born Oritsefemi Majemite Ekele better known by his stage name/first name “Oritse Femi”, is a Nigerian singer-songwriter and performer who rose to fame after releasing the remake of Fela Kuti’s “Double Wahala” song. The performance of this song earned him two nominations at the 2014 City People Entertainment Awards, as well as winning the award for Most Popular Song of the Year. The “Double Wahala” singer also walked home with Indigenous Artist of the Year award at the 2014 Nigeria Entertainment Awards. The remix of the critically acclaimed song was later released in 2014 featuring DB Record boss, D’banj aka Koko master.

After his career breakthrough in 2014 with the song “Double Wahala” , he has gradually become one of the most sought after Nigerian musician . His life stories are very inspiring , it’s a story that is filled with disappointments, hopes, failures, ups and downs and at last Success. As God would have it , his joy finally came in the morning after struggling for years in his music career .

Early Life Background And Childhood

Oritsefemi whose real name is “Oritsefemi Majemite Ekele” was born and brought up in Ajegunle, Lagos but he is originally from Delta state. Oritsefemi, the third child of his mother, raised in a polygamous family of 25 in Ajegunle. He hails from the Itsekiri tribe of North Warri, Delta State. He attended Mayday Secondary School in Ikoyi for sometime before completing his primary school education at Tolu Primary School in Ajegunle as a result of the inability of his parents to keep up with the high cost of schooling in the luxurious neighborhood of Ikoyi. From there, he switch to Army Children School for his secondary education. After his basic education at Army Children School , he attained his secondary school certificate from Randle Secondary School . He later got admission into Delta State University in Abraka to study law, but dropped out to focus fully on his music career. In a recent chat , he mentioned his greatest influences and role models where he cited the likes of great Fela Kuti, Daddy Showkey and Sizzla Kalonji.

He started his music career right from his primary school days. He also revealed that he got his inspiration from the street because he had the opportunity to hang out with the street folks who are less furtunate in the society. They has greatly influenced his career because he pick one or two things from them to compose his songs. His father is an engineer who wanted him  to follow his footsteps. His mother on the other hand being a church worker also wanted him to be in the house of God. There was conflict of choice which was a distraction and diversion for him.

“I never thought I would ever climb to where I am today. But I thank God that I have been able to get a good packaging from my record label, Shining Entertainment, which was a different level from the way I was before. In the past I had a lot of good music but there was nobody to project me. Now, I have got a lot of opportunities to show to the world the creativity that I possess.”

Musical Career And Rise To Stardom

Hid musical career started officially while he was still in the university. He mastered his art and started performing at parties and social gatherings. In a chat with The Punch, his first song ever recorded was titled “Boys dey Binu” (meaning Boys are not Happy). He was also an active member in his church where he was the lead vocalist of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church in Ajegunle, Lagos. He also played bass guitar. His music ambition also led him into attending music school in Ajegunle owned by Johnny Napp, who often invites Jamaican artists to nurture the growing talents in the community. The music school was also home for eggae sensations of the 90s like Baba Fryo, Daddy Showkey and Daddy Fresh. Oritse Femi released two albums with his group-mate, Chibudo. they titled the second album Money Na Time and they both had 8 tracks. The group was later discontinued in 2006 following some disagreements.

Following their break up, Oritse Femi and Chi-Junglist started floating their solo career but their efforts proved abbortive . He managed to release “Elewon” and “Flog Politician” in 2007 which gained massive acceptance from Ajegunle youths but wasn’t appealing to other people . Oritse Femi also released another successful single “Mama Lati” which featured “Rocksteady” another popular Ajegunle singer. His “Mercy of the Lord” was well-received by music lovers and was also well rated by music critics . Oritse Femi has released four albums since leaving Junglist and they inlcude “Wicked World”, “Musical Taliban” and more recently “Money Stops Nonsense”.

Oritse Femi became an household name and shot to limelight after the release of his hottest single “Double Wahala” is a remake of Fela Kuti’s song of the same name. According to the singer in a recent chat , he clearly stated that the sufferings of the common man in Nigerian society inspired the song. He also disclosed that his experience living close to a flooded area in Ajegunle with water rushing into his home is an event that inspired him to compose the song . It brings back his old memory, those unfortunate experience he has been through in his life.

Personal Life : Wife And Children

Oritsefemi fathered two daughters out of wedlock. He had them at a young age back in the days of Ajegunle when he was still trying to rise up in his music career. It is all good , thank the LORD he has finally arrived against all odds. The singer is currently married to a lady named “Nabila Fash” and they are expecting a baby anytime soon.
