Born Okechukwu Anthony Onyegbule better known by his stage name Okey Bakassi, is a Nigerian stand-up comedian, television personality and actor. He officially started his hustle as an actor before his transmission into comedy business , he has been able to make it very big in the comedy world and he is labelled among the top Nigerian comedian today.
Okey Bakassi is a veteran actor who has worked with several top Nollywood actors , he has featured in not less than 150 movies.
Early Life and Background
Okey Bakassi was born on 23rd October 1969 in Owerri, Imo State in the south eastern part of Nigeria to Mr. Livinus Onyegbule, a retired military personnel and Mrs. Felicia Onyegbule, a nurse.
The 50 years old entertainer is a handsome, creative, gifted, skillful and talented man who has invested all his time, efforts and money in his entertainment career . He is the first son in a family of five children. Okey Bakassi is originally from Mbaise, a small town in Imo State in the south eastern part of Nigeria .
Okey Bakassi had his primary school education at the Alvan Ikoku Demonstration School in Owerri, Imo State in the south eastern part of Nigeria where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate. After completing his primary school education, he proceeded to Mbaise Secondary School in Imo State, Nigeria where he studied briefly before moving to Federal Government College, Port Harcourt in Rivers State where he obtained his West African Senior School Certificate.
After that, he Okey Bakassi proceeded to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Engineering in 1992 from the prestigious Rivers State University of Science and Technology situated in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. Following his successful graduation from the university, he got got deployed to Lagos State for the mandatory one year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Programme.
Initially, his foremost intention was to study Theatre Arts, but for the fact that the school he got admitted into does not offer Theatre Arts as a course, he decided to settle for Agricultural Engineering.
Movie and Comedy Career
After completing his university education and doing his one year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Programme , he was posted to Nigerian Industrial Development Bank (NIDB) where he worked at the Project Resuscitation Department. Thereafter, he was fortunate enough to meet with popular movie producer and director, Zeb Ejiro who in 1993 gave him his first opportunity to appear on a network television production “Fortunes” . In this movie, he played the role of “Nick” one of the Johnson’s bodyguards. He also featured in about eleven episodes of the soap opera “Fortunes” before the Nigerian movie industry (Nollywood) .
He started his acting and comedy career at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology . Looking at his experience both as an actor and stand-up comedian at the university coupled with experience garnered during his service year as a member of the Lagos State drama troupe, he thought about it as a wise move to carry on in that direction as a career. Okey Bakassi always wanted to entertain even though the college River State University of Science & Technology at which he schooled did not have a theatre arts department . He and some other students who has similar interest and like minds came together to form a group ‘Theatre Kolleagues’ for the purpose of acting and entertaining the university community.
Okey Bakassi has featured in tons of comedy shows both home and abroad, he has also acted in several Nollywood movies before focusing his career fully on stand-up comedy. He has won couples of awards and earned some fair nominations to his name too. He won the award for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) category at the 2014 edition of the Best of Nollywood Awards in year 2014 for his role in the film “Onye Ozi”.
For some time now, Okey Bakassi has abandoned his movie career and focused more on his comedy career. This can only mean one thing perhaps his movie career is no longer paying off that is why he has decided to focus more on his comedy career. He has featured in several comedy skits and has entertained many people on different stages across the country.
In 1995, Okey Bakassi collaborated with Opa Williams and Nollywood actress Reginald Ebere sat down together to figure out a way forward in the entertainment industry. That discussion gave birth to “Night of a Thousand Laughs” a stand-up comedy show hosted in different part of Nigeria.
The comedian made it known that Opa Williams invested some money he realized from his movie business into the project and it became a success. He also revealed that it was him, Reginald Ebere and Opa Williams that created the concept of “Night of a Thousand Laughs” which is a platform that shot many Nigerians stand-up comedians to fame including I Go Dye , Gordons, Bovi, AY, Ali Baba, I Go Save, Basketmouth, Julius Agwu, Funny Borne to name a few.
Aside movie acting and comedy business, Okey Bakassi has also tried his hands on movie production. He has produced “Final Decision” in 1996, directed “All For Winnie” in 1998, produced and directed “Just Once” in 2000.
