Born Enetimi Alfred Odom but widely known by his stage name “Timaya” The  Egberi Papa One of Bayelsa,  is a Nigerian singer and songwriter who rose to sardom after the release of songs like “Plantain Boy”,”Dem Mama”, “Bum Bum”, “Sexy Ladies” etc . Timaya is the founder of South South hip hop group Dem Mama Records and has been able to gather lots of fans both in Nigeria and across the globe.

Timaya whose nick name is Egberi Papa One of Bayelsa was born on the 15 August 1980 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. He officially started his solo career in the year 2005 with the release of one of his critically acclaimed hit titled “Dem Mama”, which was also his debut album lead-single, “True Story” released the following year. Following the massive success of his first album, Timaya went ahead to release his second studio album titled “Gift and Grace”  in 2008. The energetic singer and performer gained further visibility and international prominence through his third studio album “De Rebirth” which was released in partnership with Black Body Entertainment, had “Plantain Boy” as its lead single. He also teamed up with Dem Mama Soldiers to release highly anticipated album LLNP (Long Life N Prosperity). Fast forward to the year 2012, he released another beautiful album “Upgrade”, which was supported by tracks like “Bum Bum”, “Sexy Ladies”, and “Malonogede”.

Timaya: Early Life , Background And Education

Timaya was born on 15th of August 1980 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. He was born into a large family that resided in Agip Estate, Port Harcourt and happens to be the youngest of fifteen children . His was brought up grew up by his biological parents , his father was a banker and his mother was a trader.

The young Timaya completed his Nursery and Primary education at Assemblies of God Nursery And Primary School. Thereafter, he attended Nkpolu Oroworukwo in Port Harcourt for his secondary school education . While in secondary school, he was well known because he always participated in school activities especially inter-school competitions and he was also respected among his peers for never standing for bullying . He started his music ambition at an early age when he often breaks house rules to attend late-night music events even though his parents kicks against that idea. Because of his stubborn life-style he couldn’t complete his secondary school education Port Harcourt as his mother sent him to stay with his older brother and older sister to Lagos .

Getting to Lagos, he later gained admission into Lagos’ Ikeja Grammar School where he successfully sat for SSCE and obtained a secondary school certificate. After completing his basic education in Lagos, he returned to Port Harcourt and wrote JAMB , he was later admitted into Rivers State College of Arts and Science but failed to graduate as he dropped out after performing poorly in his first semester exams. This time , he was completely drawn to Entertainment and eventually joined Eedris Abdulkareem’s hiphop group as a backup vocalist. He worked with group for three years and finally went ahead to focus on his solo career.

At this point, Timaya started breaking house rules by attending late-night music events and concerts. He started his music career professionally by recording songs in the studio and collaborating with other up-and-coming artists. He made his first cameo appearance in an unreleased music video by UDX, a Lagos-based rap group. Soon after , he ran met with producer K-Solo in Mafoluku and Oshodi who was the producer behind his first major hit record “Dem Mama” . According to the “Bum Bum” crooner in an interview , the song “Dem Mama” was an account of the 1999 destruction of Odi, a river side community in Niger Delta. Nigerian soldiers were sent down to the community to hunt down militants, in the process of accomplishing this task, they killed eight policemen, killed numerous people including adult and children and also burnt their houses to the ground.

Timaya: Music Career And Rise To Stardom

Enetimi Alfred Odom who is better known as Timaya the Egberi Papa 1 of Bayelsa dived into his solo career after releasing his hit song “Dem Mama” . The song was well-received and it appeared on his debut album, “True Story” which he released the following year. He later release his second studio album “Gift” and Grace in 2008. It proved himself belong any reasonable doubt the he has come to stay when he released his third studio album “De Rebirth” which featured “Plantain Boy” and many other hits. Meanwhile, Timaya won two awards in 2008 which include “Best Reggae/Dancehall album” at the Headies Awards and “Album of the Year” at Nigeria Music Awards.

He subsequently received two awards “Best Collaboration” for his feature on J Martins’ “Good or Bad (O Wey)” at the 2009 edition of The Headies and “Best Reggae/Dancehall album” for Gift and Grace . This was two years after he released his third album, De Rebirth. This album had production touches from renowned Nigerian producers like Akeem D Beat, Phyno, Flux, M-Yire, Jay Sleek, N.D, Jesse Jagz, and K-Solo. The Dem Mama singer has also worked with big guns in the Industry including 2face Idibia, TJ 2Solo, Allenian, Konga, Lanre, M.I Abaga, TJ, Don Jazzy, Wrecoba, Mr 2Kay, Olamide Baddo, Phyno Phino just to mention a few.

In 2010, Timaya was featured by female gospel artist Kefee on her hit song titled “Kokoroko”, the hit song later won “Best Collaboration” category at the 2010 Headies Awards. LLNP (Long Life And Prosperity) album was released in November 2011 and it was a collaborative album with Dem Mama Soldiers. His third studio album was released On 25 June 2012, the 14-track album titled “Upgrade” which was home for tracks like “Sexy Ladies”, “Bum Bum”, “Malonogede” and many others. Some artistes that appeared on that album include Attitude who have been absent from the entertainment industry for a long time, Terry G and Vector da Viper.

Fast forward to the year 2014, Timaya released his fourth solo album titled “Epiphany” which was one of his best work as it was highly rated and chart topping as well as appearing in several top 10 count down.

Timaya Controversies

One of Timaya’s hottest controversies was his relationship with film star, Empress Njamah which didn’t end well. He also disclosed in a recent chat that he was a s*x slave to an older woman a long time ago.
He said, “When I had nowhere to stay, I had to go and live with a woman friend who turned me into a prisoner. I had to live by her rules. I could not go anywhere until she allows me to. I could never stay out until 7pm, or else I am in trouble. She was older than me by four years and I did not have a choice”.

“If i dear complain about any things it means i am ready to pack my things and leave the house because she always threatened to throw me out of her house. Each time i complain about fatigue when its time to do the do, she would accuse me of sleeping with other ladies, and she will again threaten to throw my things out. It all happened to me when i was still residing in Port Hacourt and it was a very challenging experience for me . It took me years to raise money for my own apartment . I am very happy that it is all behind me now because no body deserves such torment in life”.

Another controversy happened when Timaya teamed up with Phyno and Olamide Baddo to release their reigning single “Telli Person”, a song that throw shades at Instagram Millionaire Hushpuppi. The internet sensation man retaliated by insulting them and accused them of singer rubbish even in their old age.  The whole matter started when Hushpuppi accused Phyno and Ice prince Zamani of patronizing fake designer products.

  • Timaya won two awards in 2008 and they are “Album of the year” at Nigeria Music Awards and “Best Reggae/Dancehall album” at the Headies Awards.
    He also won two awards “Best Reggae/Dancehall album” for Gift and Grace and “Best Collaboration” for his feature on J Martins’ “Good or Bad (O wey)” at the 2009 Headies Awards
