Nathaniel Bassey is a colossal gospel singer, trumpeter, music minister and producer. It is no longer news that the Gospel artiste is one of the most famous name in the Nigerian Gospel music scene. He is one of the most talented gospel artistes in Nigeria who has won couples of awards and honours to his name. Early Life And Background
Nathaniel was born in the year 1978 to a Lagos-based family from Ikot Ofon Ikono in Uyo local government area of Akwa-Ibom state, South-South Nigeria. Nathaniel is the son of a Mr E Joshua Bassey a devout Christian , who was a minister in The Apostolic Church Bashua Assembly . The young super star had early passion for music , he grew up wanting to become musician who will major particularly the Jazz music genre. He had cited some gospel music icon who inspired him to become what he is today, the mentioned the likes of Dr Panam Percy Paul and some others.
He started his early career by playing to the music of Louis Armstrong, Miles Davies, Stan Getz and Kirk Whalum, Phil Driscoll, Clifford Brown, Charlie Parker, Hugh Masakela and other Jazz luminaries. Due to his love for music and jazz to be specific, he teamed up with his friends to found a music group . After some years, he traveled to Lagos Nigeria to join a jazz quartet Spectrum 4, where he played alongside his childhood friends.

Nathaniel Bassey initially started his University education at the University of Lagos where he did a little bit of Urban and Regional Planning. After spending two years at University of Lagos, he later gained admission into the University of London where he studied Politics and International Relations .
After developing an uncommon interest for jazz music, he officially began his career by listening, imitating and playing the songs of Louis Armstrong, Stan Getz and Kirk Whalum, Phil Driscoll, Hugh Masekela , Miles Davies, Clifford Brown, Charlie Parker and other jazz luminaries. Getting to Lagos , he joined a top jazz quartet known as Spectrum 4 and played alongside some of his friends.
After some years, he was approached by one of the most respected figures in the Nigerian jazz and music circle, a famous man called Elder Steve Rhodes who is no doubt the very first Jazz Orchestra in the country – THE STEVE RHODES ORCHESTRA. After joining the group, he was with them for two years and served as band leader. Following the beginning of his professional music career , he left the group to focus more on his solo career.
Only few years into his foray of gospel music, he was able to wow the world with his unique soulful trumpeting style which many top entertainers and composers within and outside the country loved, the likes of Teemac, Peter King, Sotiris Papadopoulos, Paul Petersen, Ayo Bankole Jr, Cobhams Asuquo, Wole Oni, Yinka Davies, Adlan Cruise, Funsho Ogundipe, The French Cultural centre, American International School to name a few.
As time progresses , there was more people and organization that sought after him in the music industry. His journey into gospel music however, began when he started sensing a deep yearning within that there was more to his music than he thought. This feeling necessitated him to seek for answers and with the mentorship and guidance of Late Pastor Eskor Mfon, the former Pastor of The Redeemed Christian Church Of God, City Of David Parish. After meeting with the man of God, a powerful and soul changing gospel artiste was officially born.
His music beginning was not an easy one as he faced a lot of pressure from his friends who thought he was going to the wrong way . They called him stupid because they thought it was not smart enough to abandon what was becoming a thriving mainstream music career to serve exclusively at a local church.
Nathaniel Bassey also attended music courses in and out of the country including the Middlesex University Summer School UK, where he studied popular music and music business. He writes, sings and produces his own music and records with diverse groups of musicians. His debut album Elohim was recorded and mixed in Cape Town, South Africa in the year 2008.
Nathaniel Bassey held a christian program called The Hallelujah Challenge. This program was an online 30-day midnight prayer and praise session. The online live gospel movement on Facebook and Instagram allowed viewers to connect from 12 am to 1 am daily throughout the month of June 2017.
While the online program was going on, thousands and hundreds of people followed . According to CNN report about the program , about 68,000 people joined the Instagram live stream, while over 50,000 joined the Facebook live stream. This will tell you how big it was .
