Born Kingsley Chinweike Okonkwo but popularly known by his stage name “Kcee” (sometimes stylised as KCee), is a Nigerian singer and songwriter who started his music career in the Hip Hop duo group called “Kc Presh” before they later disbanded. Kcee as he is generally called, is the front-line act currently signed to Five Star Music owned by his younger brother E- Money. He has worked with top Nigerian producers like Del B who is behind the production of his hit single “Limpopo” (Kcee song)”.
Early life Background , Childhood And Music Career
Kingsley Chinweike Okonkwo who is widely known by his stage name Kcee was born and brought up in Ajegunle, Lagos . He was raised in the ghetto area of Lagos state by his by father is who a well recognised Disk Jockey also known as DJ. He completed his primary school education at Central High school, Isolo; and went on to University Of Nsukka where he bagged a degree in TheatreArts. The “Limpopo” crooner made some revelation during an interview session with vanguard;
He said “In Ajegunle there is hustle and struggle . You need to fight for yourself because laziness will be at your own detriment that is why you must be sharp in the ghetto. In the ghetto you need to hustle for yourself.
My parents tried training me in school, but of course my dream was beyond that. I saw other young people hustling and I had to join the trend to secure my future. It is either you hustle or you die in the ghetto and like I said I didn’t want to beg, so I had to hustle for myself and today it’s paying off.”
His early ambition was to become professional footballer when he was growing up , he played for Julius Berger and Puma football clubs locally. He playfully started singing when he was in secondary school. Initially, he was playing football but later, he started singing after joinning their church choir. Being that his father was a professional Dj, he was already conversant with music as he has already been listening to a wide variety of music from different genre . His music career kick started proper in 2002 when he participated in “Star Quest” competition and emerged winner of the highly coveted show. He disclosed that he was paid N20,000 in his first show .
When he started his musical career newly, his mother approved of it but left for his father , he was hoping he would study hard and become a doctor or lawyer as it is what every father would wish his child in those days because music wasn’t really paying off. His father later changed his mind after Kcee started bringing money home , that was when he decided to let him follow his dream.
Music Career Inception
Kcee teamed up with his long time friend to pursue their career in music as a duo. They worked together and finally gained recognition in the entertainment industry before they had a fall out when lead to their break-up in 2011. They were together for twelve good years before splitting up to pursue their solo career. Kcee and Presh met in church choir and thought it wise to link up , that was how they created Kcee Presh. After meeting and settling to work together, they both signed up for Star Quest TV reality show together and won the show.
After disbanding in 2011, KC Presh signed a record deal with “Kennis Music” (the biggest record label in Nigeria at the time) and made a big debut in 2003. They left the label after some years to found their own label – “KP Records” in 2006 precisely after the spell at Kennis They re-launched the label as ‘Blingz Record’, affiliated with Grafton Records in the South around 2008. They released an album under the Blingz Records Imprint titled ‘No Time’ with the lead single ‘Shokori bobo’ in 2008.
Few years later , they went their separate ways with the intention to pursue their solo career. Kcee with the influence of his brother Emeka Okonkwo aka E-money founded “Five Star Music” where he is currently signed unto. He gained massive appeal after releasing “Limpopo “, a song that brought him to a bigger limelight. Before Limpopo , he already dropped eight songs . According to the singer, When he recorded Limpopo, it took him less than 40minutes. Limpopo is one of his most popular songs which he has performed in several events , he said he has performed the song in the Villa more than four times. He has also performed the song in the Villa for the President and the First Lady as well as wedding for many governors’ children.
He released his debut album called ‘Take over’ in 2013. The album led him to winning several awards like KORA awards, Channel O awards and Hip-hop world awards. He featured some big artistes in the album including star-boy Wizkid, Flavour N’abania, D’Banj, Timaya, Mr. Songz, Skiibii, Phyno Phino, Davido and Mavin Reord boss Don Jazzy.
