The president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari appointed Ibrahim Idris Kpotun as the new Inspector General of Police replacing Solomon Arase, who retired from the police force on 21 June 2016. He was initially appointed as the acting Nigerian Inspector General of Police before he was officially given the full responsibility of the office on 21 March 2016 following the retirement of the former IGP, Solomon Arase who also had a good reputable during his time as the head of Nigerian police force.
Early Life, Background And Education
Ibrahim Idris Kpotun was born on 15 January 1959, and enlisted into the Nigerian Police Force in 1984, after graduating from the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria with a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture. He is an indigene of Kutigi, Lavun in Niger State. After graduating from the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, he proceeded to the University of Maiduguri where he studied and obtained a degree in Law. He kick started his Nigeria Police career after graduation from the university in the year 1984 .
He started his career in the Nigeria Police as Cadet Assistant Superintendent Of Police (ASP), from where he rose to the rank he is today. Prior to his appointment as the new Inspector General of Police IGP , he was an Assistant Inspector General of Police(Operations), FHQ Abuja. He also worked in the Police Mobile Force for seventeen years as Unit Commander, Squadron Commander, and Commandant . Idris also served as the Kano state and Nasarawa State police commands in Nigeria at the Force Headquarters while on the rank of Commissioner of Police.
Mr Ibrahim Kpotum Idris police IGP was posted as Gusau Police Divisional Crime Officer in 1986 and later Unit Commander 7PMF Sokoto between 1987 and 1989 just after starting his police career in 1984 when he joined the force as Cadet ASP. As a result of his excelling competence, unique performance, commitment to duty and doggedness, he was promoted to the rank of Deputy Police Commissioner Operations and Second in Command at the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor Leste UNMIT between 2009 to April 2011 .
Ibrahim Kpotum Idris was part of the United Nations Mission in Liberia and East Timor ,a mission that led to his being rewarded with the “Medal of Merit” by the President of the Republic of East Timor in recognition of his service.
AIG Idris, who was in charge of Operations at the Force Headquarters before his appointment as the Acting Inspector-General of Police, will act in that capacity pending his confirmation. Aside his formal education, the Nigerian police IGP had also attended numerous other courses and training in Nigeria and oversea and equally took part in several peace keeping missions in many countries of the world.
