His real name is Michael Collins Ajereh but he is widely known as Don Jazzy, is a Nigerian Multi award-winning record producer, singer-songwriter, musician, entrepreneur and the co-founder of Mo’Hits Records alongside D’Banj in 2004 . Jazzy is the CEO of the Mavin Records  which he set up all by himself. Don Jazzy founded his Mavin Records label on May 8, 2012 Following the closure of Mo’Hits Records.

Although most people know him as Don Jazzy, but his real name is Michael Collins Ajereh, a name given to him by his biological parents. Don Jazzy was born on the 26th day of November, 1982 to the family of Mr. and Mrs. Ajereh in Umuahia, Abia State. He co-founded the then popular Mo’Hits Records with his old time friend D’Banj in 2004 . They finally called it a wrap in May 2012 . He was the one that signed D’Banj at the early stage of their music business but as time goes on D’Banj became part owner of the label, precisely the label’s Vice President

Don Jazzy welcomed himself into his music production career with a full credit production work in 2004 on Tongolo for Nigerian singer D’banj. After that successful song, he also produce D’banj’s first studio album titled “No Long Thing” released in 2005 which was a successful album . He has also produced songs for  Dr SID, Wande Coal, D’Prince, Darey, Naeto C, Olakunle Excel at Zanga (O.A.U), Sauce Kid, Ikechukwu & Tiwa Savage. He also served as their background vocals in many of their tracks. His production credits can also be seen in other works like the collaboration with Jay-Z and Kanye West on the production of Lift off featuring Beyonce on the album Watch The Throne, released on August 8, 2011. Forbes listed him as one of the “Most powerful celebrity in Africa” , he was ranked 36th on the list.

Early Life and Education

Michael Collins Ajereh aka Don Jazzy was born in Umuahia Abia State on the 26th day of November, 1982. His parents Mr. and Mrs. Ajereh are from Isuikwuato L.G.A in Abia state but lived in Ajegunle, Lagos where he was brought up. He graduated from Federal Government College Lagos. His childhood ambition was to become a musician because he was so in love with music , he always had a flair for music singing and playing the drums from the age of four. He started playing bass guitar at the age of 12 as his passion kept developing. He attended Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma in Edo State where he obtained a degree in Business Management. In 2000, Don Jazzy traveled down to the United Kingdom honoring his uncle’s request to come play the drums for a neighborhood Church.

Following his arrival in the United Kingdom, he took up several odd jobs including working at McDonalds and as a security guard. He continued his interest in music, further built on his musical knowledge during his UK stint. Finding fellow kindred sprits in the likes of Solek, JJC, Kas, The 419 squad and Dbanj, the g*ng would spend unrelenting hours practicing, recording and performing different types of music. Soon after, he started improving his producing skills from Emeka Infiniti at O-Town record company.

After setting up Mo’ Hits Records in 2004, he produced the albums No Long Thing and Rundown/Funk You Up. He was now working on third album, Curriculum Vitae, had also been started. This time around Don Jazzy has already created a brand for himself and needing no introduction in every households. Soon after, he developed a recognisable introduction, “It’s Don Jazzy Again!” which has remained his signatory introduction.

In 2008, they signed a new artiste to the label and it was Wande Coal . After Wande, along came other artists like Dprince, Dr. Sid and many others . He had other production credits for the best selling album of that year, The Entertainer. He also did his production magic on Wande Coal’s Mushin 2 MoHits, an album that was described as one of the best albums to ever come out of Nigeria. After few years of success  Mo’ Hits records met it’s end in 2011 . It was later dissolved due to irreconcilable differences between the two major partners, Don Jazzy and Dbanj. Upon dissolution, both parties went on to float individual record labels; whilst Dbanj went on to float DB records and sign on to GOOD Music, an international record label owned by Kanye West, Don Jazzy founded his own record label, Mavin records.

After bringing in Tiwa Savage he promised fans that there are many more exciting faces to be “activated” by the label in the near future. He went on to sign them — Korede Bello, AphroDija, and Reekadobanks.

Don Jazzy has cooked not less than 60 songs, both for artists signed on his record labels and those who aren’t. He has also collaborated in couple of single with his signee and some neutral artistes. Jazzy is one of those humble , soft-spoken producer who is not too involved in social media and known to grant less interviews. Although, he is a user of social networking sites like Twitter and Instagram but a fan of newfeed. He has over 1.21 million followers on Twitter.
